Liverpool midfielder James McConnell made the best out of the opportunity against PSV Eindhoven in the 3-2 Champions League loss. The Reds lost their final Champions League League-Phase game but still finished first in the overall table for this season.

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot played a young side mixed with academy players and squad players who require game time. Slot rested several first-team starters ahead of the Premier Lague clash with in-form Bournemouth in an away game next weekend.

Slot deployed McConnell alongside Harvey Elliott and Wataru Endo in the midfield against a strong PSV side that won Eredivisie. PSV delivered a strong physical performance with their fanbase putting pressure on the visitors, proving why they are once again at the top of their domestic league this season.

McConnell featured for the senior team last season under the legendary manager Jurgen Klopp, catching the eyes of the fanbase. However, the 20-year-old’s performance against PSV will build a lot of expectations within the supporters as he showcased various skills.

The young Englishman also displayed maturity and ability to perform under adversities when his teammates struggled to perform well. Fotmob stat revealed McConnell had the most tackles (four) in the Champions League game for Liverpool against PSV.

The 20-year-old made 41 passes with 85% passing accuracy with nine passes into the final third. He enjoyed 64 touches with one touch inside the opposition box, getting dispossessed just twice despite the opposition’s physical approach.

Defensively, McConnell made three clearances through header, one clearance, and three recoveries apart from his 100% tackling rate. Furthermore, he completed 10 defensive actions which showcases his ability to influence the game in both offensive and defensive phases.

The 20-year-old academy midfielder also won seven duels and earned one foul during his all-round display for Liverpool. There is a potential for McConnell to compete in the senior team but a loan spell to gain experience could benefit him immensely.
