Tottenham Hotspur have been considering a January swoop for highly-rated Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo.
The future of Antoine Semenyo is set to be a hot topic in the January transfer window. The Bournemouth star has been on fire this season, scoring six goals and providing three assists in the first 11 Premier League games. Regardless of not having assisted or scored since October, interest in the Ghanaian international remains high.
Recent reports suggest Liverpool have joined Spurs in the race to sign Semenyo, while the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City and Arsenal remain interested in his services. The 25-year-old was coveted by several clubs including Man United and Tottenham in the past summer transfer window but penned a lucrative new contract with the Cherries until June 2030.
While Bournemouth managed to keep Semenyo after losing key players such as Dean Huijsen, Milos Kerkez, Illia Zabarnyi and Dango Ouattara in the summer, they agreed that the fresh deal would contain a £65m release clause. This £65million release clause can be triggered in January and Bournemouth would be powerless to stop Semenyo from leaving, fuelling speculation about his future.
Thomas Frank wants to bring in a top-quality left-winger in January to bolster his forward line. Except for Mohammed Kudus, none of the wide players have performed consistently so far this season, thereby highlighting the need for a dynamic winger who can produce and score goals at equal measure. And at this moment in time, who else better than Semenyo in the Premier League?
TalkSPORT pundit Jamie O’Hara has now urged the north London outfit to splash the cash for the Bournemouth star during the mid-season trading period. He has advised his former club to avoid an Eze moment and just pay the fee to get the deal done.
“Yeah. The thing is why I think Spurs should go all out. If he’s got 65 million release scores, we should throw everything at him to get him,” Jamie O’Hara told on TalkSPORT.
“Don’t mess about. Don’t have an Eze moment, you know, where you are um and about it. You’re trying to just get the deal done, say what you want, and pay him the fee. And if we can get him in January, he’s a massive asset.”
Truly, Spurs had the Eberechi Eze deal firmly in their grips, but dilly-dallying led to Arsenal swooping in and luring him to the Emirates Stadium in August. The Hotspur Way chiefs must learn from their past mistakes, and if they feel Semenyo is worth the £65million fee, they must pay it. Of course, to have favourable paying terms spread over several years, Tottenham may need to slightly splash more than his release clause.
Even if the 25-year-old will depart for the AFCON starting from next month, signing him in January would represent a roaring long-term success for Tottenham. And Kudus, who happens to be his Ghanaian compatriot, could play a decisive role in helping the Lilywhites land Semenyo. There is going to be intense competition for the Bournemouth talisman’s signature, and Spurs must do everything possible to bring him in to N17.
