Jason Wilcox has officially received The FA’s red legacy cap, as seen on the official Manchester United website, in recognition for his career with England’s national team.
United’s Director of Football, who was appointed to his current post in June 2025, made three appearances for the national team between 1996 and 2000.
The first of these appearances came against Hungary, where he came off the bench, before subsequent appearances followed against France and Argentina.
Wilcox had also been named in the provisional squad for Euro 2000 but injury ruled him out of this with Gareth Barry taking his spot.
Alongside his appearances for the senior national team, Jason Wilcox also made two appearances for the B team with these coming against Chile and Hong Kong.
Although Wilcox is currently employed by Manchester United, he never actually played for the club during his playing career.
He would instead spend the majority of his career with Blackburn Rovers, where he made 271 appearances across ten years spanning from 1989 to 1999.
In this time, his performances also earned him the majority of the appearances he made for England.
Spells with Leeds United and Leicester City would follow across the next seven years with him making 101 appearances for the sides in this time.
Blackpool would be the left-winger’s final club with a loan spell coming in the 2005-06 season before he joined the Tangerines on a free transfer until the end of that season.
Jason Wilcox is the latest person associated with Manchester United to receive the legacy cap.
He is not the only person associated with the club to receive the award since its introduction in 2019, however.
Jonathan Woodgate has received the red legacy cap for his appearances for England between 1999 and 2007 whilst current Manchester United interim manager Michael Carrick has also received the award.
A series of current United players have also received the cap with Luke Shaw, Tom Heaton, Harry Maguire, Mason Mount, and Kobbie Mainoo all recipients.
Manchester United players may continue to receive the award in the coming years with young talents such as JJ Gabriel and Jim Thwaites coming through the club’s academy currently.
