The academy at Manchester United has once again become one of the biggest talking points around the club.

Michael Carrick has shown a willingness to bring young players into his first-team environment, with several academy prospects getting opportunities during pre-season.

One of the biggest stories has been JJ Gabriel, who has been on multiple clubs radar for years and has developed a huge reputation before even turning 16.

The forward first made history in April 2025 when, aged 14, he became United’s youngest-ever U18 player and scored twice against Leeds on his debut.

His rise continued last season as JJ Gabriel became the inaugural Premier League U18 Player of the Season after scoring 20 goals in just 21 league appearances.

Across all competitions, he finished the campaign with 26 goals and 4 assists in 29 appearances, while also helping United reach the FA Youth Cup final.

The teenager then stepped closer to Carrick’s first team during the summer, making his unofficial senior debut against Atletico Madrid in August.

Gabriel came off the bench for the final eight minutes of the 2-1 victory, becoming the youngest player to represent United’s first team in a non-competitive fixture.

He was subsequently handed the No.77 shirt and was viewed as a genuine candidate to make his competitive debut during the season.

His form also continued at youth level, with Gabriel scoring a hat-trick in United’s 5-0 UEFA Youth League victory over Sabah in September.

That performance came just days before the situation surrounding his future at Old Trafford dramatically changed.

Gabriel’s representatives informed United that he wanted his registration cancelled, with the club reportedly shocked by the request after having planned to include him against Brighton in the Carabao Cup.

Gabriel would have become United’s youngest-ever competitive player had he featured, but that opportunity disappeared after his camp requested a move.

The teenager has since not returned to Carrington and has instead been training individually in Castelldefels, near Barcelona, with private coaches as his future remains unresolved.

JJ Gabriel deadline reached for Manchester United

Now, with Gabriel turning 16 today, the Manchester United wonderkid has reached the key deadline that allows him to agree a move with clubs in the European Union.

Gabriel is eligible for an Irish passport through his father, former Republic of Ireland international Joe O’Cearuill, giving him an important route around the post-Brexit restrictions affecting young English players moving abroad.

Reports have linked Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain with the forward, although Barcelona sporting director Deco has publicly denied that the club is involved.

Real Madrid have been reported as leading the race, while Bayern are known to admire Gabriel and PSG have also been linked with a move.

His time training in Barcelona has naturally intensified speculation over his next destination, although his presence there does not by itself confirm that a move to the Catalan club is imminent.

United have tried to convince Gabriel to remain at the club, but the situation has now entered a new phase.

fUnder FIFA’s rules, his Irish citizenship means he can move to an EU country once he is 16, while United could receive considerably less compensation for an overseas move than they would for a domestic transfer.

For a player who was only months ago being tipped to become United’s youngest competitive debutant, the speed of the change is remarkable.

Gabriel’s next move could now become one of the biggest academy transfer stories surrounding United, with some of Europe’s biggest clubs watching closely.
