John Murtough steps down as United’s football director after 10 years; Dan Ashworth lined up as replacement

John Murtough has stepped down from his position as Manchester United’s football director, as confirmed this afternoon by the ever-reliable David Ornstein and Laurie Whitwell.

Although today is the first time supporters have received confirmation of the news, reports have suggested that it was coming ever since Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s minority stake was ratified.

The new Red Devils co-owner has shown his desire to get the wheels in motion on a complete reshuffle in the club’s hierarchy. In the summer, you’d expect that he’d do so to the squad, too.

The Athletic’s update reveals that Murtough will be relieved of his duties this week after choosing to vacate the role which he has held for over 10 years.

His successor is expected to be Dan Ashworth of Newcastle United once he finishes his period of gardening leave with the fellow Premier League outfit. Elsewhere, United are anticipating that Jason Wilcox will become the new technical director when he formally cuts ties with Southampton.

Wilcox’s arrival could be sealed in a matter of weeks, while Ashworth’s is taking significantly longer to sanction.
