There’s been a bit of a shift in the discussion around Cole Palmer, as John Obi Mikel has suggested that the midfielder’s Manchester United links go beyond simple transfer speculation.
Cole Palmer was linked with Manchester United throughout much of the January transfer window, though nothing ever came of it, as expected.
However, according to Liam Rosenior, after speaking with Palmer at Cobham, it appeared he was content, and his absences were more related to injury and fitness rather than anything else.
He’s starting to find some rhythm at Chelsea now too. Four goals and one assist isn’t bad going for someone still managing their way back to full fitness, with Rosenior continuing to rotate him when needed.
It’s not out of character for John Obi Mikel to share bold opinions about Chelsea on the Obi One Podcast, and his latest remarks were no exception.
This time, he pointed to Palmer’s current situation, implying there may be more going on than meets the eye.
Mikel said: “Right, Palmer is not really happy. Yes, he struggled with injuries, but he’s back playing, but he’s not quite back to his best. Yes, there are stories about him linking him to Manchester United.”
“They’re not going away. There’s no smoke without fire, man.”
While there has been speculation linking Palmer with a move to Old Trafford, his reasons for wanting a return to Manchester may have more to do with a sense of personal belonging than anything football-related. The real question is whether he would be willing to walk away from what he’s built at Chelsea.
Palmer has become a central figure in Chelsea’s project, and that influence is only growing as the club develops around him. He recently played a key role in their Europa Conference League win over Aston Villa and followed it up by scoring twice in the UEFA Super Cup victory against Barcelona.
There’s also the financial aspect. Palmer remains under contract at Stamford Bridge until 2033, and Chelsea would not be keen to let him go for anything less than an extraordinary offer.
Staying at Chelsea gives him the opportunity to continue being the focal point of a team built around his strengths. Moving back north might appeal emotionally, but it would mean giving up his current status for something far less certain.
