'John Terry was young' – Pochettino calls on Chelsea legend to compare current situation

Mauricio Pochettino has called upon the example of Chelsea legend John Terry when explaining and justifying the current situation at the club.

The Blues are in action tonight against Everton at Stamford Bridge, and they really need to win this game if they want to keep the European qualification dreams alive.

The new owners have adopted a transfer policy of only signing young players, at least under the age of 25. One of those players, Carney Chukwuemeka, has a decent chance of starting the game for Chelsea tonight with more injury problems for Pochettino to deal with.

He is just one example of all the top young talents the club have been signing. Whilst this has many positives, it also has negatives and has drawn many criticisms from fans of the club as well as media and former players.

The squad build has been rather naive and they are certainly missing some proven quality and experience, and this is what has drawn criticism.

Pochettino though, has bitten back a bit at that today and has used the example of Terry being a young player when he first came through at the club and had to develop his leadership qualities.

In words from his latest pre-match press conference for Everton, Pochettino said: “John Terry was young. I don’t believe when he was 18, 19 he was already a leader. Those players were in a different situation. Maybe they had some help when they were young, maybe they were in another project. We are in a project where 80 or 90 per cent of the players are young. They need to grow all together. They need some help. That’s why we are here, to help them in this process to become leaders. We’re talking about too many players that only arrived this season at Chelsea and in the Premier League.”

I guess he does raise a good point here really.
