Tottenham boss Thomas Frank will decide whether to keep Will Lankshear in his squad or send him out on loan after the pre-season tour

In the next couple of weeks, Tottenham Hotspur players are due to arrive back at Hotspur Way to begin preparations for next season. New boss Thomas Frank will be assessing the squad as he looks to change the club’s fortunes and bring some much-needed stability after an up-and-down two years under Ange Postecoglou.

Several players are set to start afresh under the Danish tactician during pre-season training, including youngsters who went out on loan last season. And one of them is Will Lankshear.

Will Lankshear arrived at White Hart Lane from Sheffield United as a highly-regarded prospect in 2022. Since arriving at Spurs, he has been banging goals left, right and centre in the academy. After an incredible 2023/24 season with the Under-21s, the centre-forward penned a new contract until 2029 (Transfermarkt).

The 20-year-old made six first-team appearances for Tottenham during the first half of last season, scoring his first goal in the 3-2 Europa League win over Galatasaray in November. He was loaned out to West Bromwich Albion for the second half of the season during the January transfer window. Lankshear struggled to make an impact at West Brom, going goalless in 11 Championship appearances.

Regardless, Football London journalist Alasdair Gold revealed on his YouTube channel that plenty of clubs across England and abroad want to take the Englishman on loan, including West Brom, who will be managed by former Spurs assistant coach Ryan Mason next season. And reputed Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham feels Frank will want to evaluate Lankshear first in the pre-season before deciding whether to keep him in the squad or loan him out.

“I imagine Lankshear will go on the pre-season tour,” John Wenham exclusively told Tottenham News.

“He will be looking to get some minutes, and Frank will make his decision. I know there was a story about Brentford looking at Lankshear when Frank was there, when he was scoring all those goals at Sheffield United after leaving Arsenal.

“I’m sure Frank will take a look, and if Lankshear is sanctioned to go on loan, I’m sure practically every team in the Championship would want him, so he’ll have options.”

There is no doubt that Lankshear is a talented lad and can become a reliable striker, provided he gets the right guidance, coaching and nurturing. He was afforded a few opportunities by Ange during the first half of the season and the striker showed his goalscoring ability by netting against Galatasaray in the Europa League at the Rams Park. However, owing to clear inexperience, the Spurs striker was sent off in the second half, as Galatasaray went onto win the game 3-2.

It remains to be seen how Lankshear performs in the upcoming pre-season and what Frank decides, but given regular game time will be difficult to be guaranteed next term, it will be in Lankshear’s best interests to go out on another loan to continue his development. Regardless of not scoring in his last temporary spell at the Hawthorns, West Brom- now managed by Mason- may again target the 20-year-old.
