Manchester United have spent much of the summer reshaping their squad as Michael Carrick looks to build on the foundations laid during his first months in charge.

The Red Devils added Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans early in the window before bringing in Carlos Baleba from Brighton, while goalkeeper Karl Darlow also arrived as the club continued to strengthen across the pitch.

Tynan Thompson, Kit Margetson and Cristian Orozco were also brought into the setup as United continued to invest in younger players alongside their more established additions.

There was plenty of movement in the opposite direction too, with several players leaving permanently or heading out on loan as Carrick’s squad underwent another significant reshuffle.

With the men’s squad now looking considerably different, attention has also turned to changes taking place elsewhere within the Manchester United setup.

Jose Herrera officially joins Manchester United

Manchester United have confirmed, on their website, the appointment of Jose Herrera as the new assistant head coach of the women’s first team, with the Spaniard joining Eva Olid’s coaching staff after Scott Rogers departed for Brighton.

Jose Herrera arrives at Old Trafford with a coaching career that began remarkably early, having started working in football at just 16 before progressing through youth coaching, analysis and senior management roles.

His first major senior opportunity came with Malaga in 2019, after several years working with UDG Tenerife as an assistant and tactical analyst.

Malaga described him at the time as a specialist in tactical analysis who had already gained experience in Spain’s top level of women’s football.

He subsequently took charge of Granada before returning to Tenerife, where he spent several seasons developing his experience as a head coach.

The move abroad then followed in 2024 when Herrera took charge of Al-Hilal’s women’s side in Saudi Arabia, giving him his first opportunity to work outside Spain.

Atletico Madrid later brought him back to Spain during the 2025/26 season, appointing him midway through the campaign.

That spell in Madrid proved significant, with Herrera guiding Atletico to fifth place in Liga F and the Copa de la Reina final, where they were beaten 3-1 by Barcelona.

He finished his Atletico stint with 10 wins, three draws and six defeats across 19 competitive matches.

Jose Herrera will now work alongside Olid, Gavin Beith and Dan Bale.

United Women began the WSL season with defeats against London City Lionesses and Chelsea, followed by a draw against Arsenal, before finally claiming their first league victory under Olid with a 2-1 win over West Ham.

There has also been a much brighter story in the League Cup, where United opened their campaign with a 10-1 victory over Sheffield United before following that up with a 5-1 win against Durham.

The club also made several notable additions to the women’s squad during the summer, bringing in Andrea Medina, Janina Leitzig, Monica Jusu Bah and Mexico captain Rebeca Bernal.

Those arrivals came alongside significant departures, including Melvine Malard to Chelsea, Gabby George to Brighton and Millie Turner to Birmingham City.

Now Herrera will become another important figure in Olid’s new-look coaching structure, with United hoping his experience across Spain, Saudi Arabia and European women’s football can help push the team forward.
