Following the news that Jose Mourinho appears to be heading to Real Madrid, the former Manchester United manager’s club appears to have found their replacement.
Despite previously denying contact with Real Madrid, Jose Mourinho is reportedly in advanced talks with the Spanish club, with their president Florentino Perez in touch with the 63-year-old, and him only, to replace Alvaro Arbeloa.
It leaves Benfica looking for a replacement for Jose Mourinho, who has understandably jumped at the chance for another stint in charge at one of the world’s biggest football clubs.
Mourinho previously managed Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013, winning LaLiga, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup during his stint, but ultimately failed to deliver the all-important Champions League.
Mourinho’s replacement at Benfica is set to be Fulham manager Marco Silva, according to Ramon Alvarez de Mon on X, who will arrive by taking a pay cut from the London club.
In 227 games in charge of Fulham, Silva has turned the Cottagers from an EFL Championship club to one with comfortable Premier League status. Since his arrival in 2021, the club has played 227 matches, winning an impressive 103 overall.
The Portuguese manager’s Fulham contract has been slowly but surely running out for some time, and he is set to become a free agent upon its expiration. Alvarez de Mon’s tweet regarding the situation suggests Silva may depart the London club early, with Benfica managerless for now.
It looks like an interesting move, but Silva and Mourinho are of similar characters. While nobody is quite like the self-proclaimed ‘special one’, this really could be seen as a like-for-like change in the managerial department for Benfica.
As for Mourinho, his time at Real Madrid will be defined by the trophies he collects – he will have to do a better job than his first stint thirteen years ago to come out as a winner.
