Josh Acheampong has featured in more than one role this season, and Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior is quite a fan of his play.
Acheampong started his first-team career with Chelsea as a right-back, and he’s been used in the same position this season.
But the 19-year-old has also spent time in central defence, highlighting how flexible he can be.
Before Chelsea’s match against Leeds United on Tuesday, Rosenior spoke about where he sees Acheampong fitting into the squad long-term.
The English manager views Acheampong as a centre-half and has not hesitated to say so.
In comments reported by football.london ahead of the Leeds United game, Rosenior said: “Josh is an amazing talent. I’ve got to meet him and his parents. Josh has got immense potential.
“What I like to do is put them in different positions because it improves their understanding of the game. Long-term, Josh is a centre-back and he has all the attributes to become a great centre-back.”
Chelsea’s depth at centre-back is notable. Alongside Acheampong, there are players like Trevoh Chalobah, Wesley Fofana, Benoit Badiashile, Tosin Adarabioyo and Mamadou Sarr all vying for spots.
Levi Colwill will add to that list once he is back from his ACL injury. His expected return later this season could be significant for Chelsea.
With so many choices available, it will be interesting to see how much playing time Acheampong manages before the season wraps up.
If opportunities remain limited, the England Under-21 defender might look elsewhere when the summer transfer window opens.
