Tottenham Hotspur are languishing in the bottom half of the table and look increasingly likely to miss out on European qualification this season unless they reinforce the squad further.
Spurs have won just two out of their last 15 Premier League games, which is relegation form in reality. There is a growing feeling that the squad is not responding to Thomas Frank’s system and ideas during matches.
One of the major concerns has been the lack of creativity and goals from the wingers. After Brennan Johnson’s sale to Crystal Palace at the start of the month, Thomas Frank has been left with Mohammed Kudus, Wilson Odobert and Mathys Tel as options out wide. Of which, Kudus, the team’s most productive attacker, has been ruled out until late March with a quad injury. Odobert and Tel are young, raw players lacking end product, so Tottenham could do well with an injection of quality in wide areas before the transfer window slams shut.
It comes as little surprise that the north London club are now keen to act quickly in the January window and secure a dynamic left-winger. Recent reports suggest Tottenham are interested in signing West Ham winger Crysencio Summerville. They have explored the possibility of signing the 24-year-old, who is valued at around £25m, by West Ham.
Crysencio Summerville was excellent in West Ham’s stunning 2-1 win over Tottenham recently, scoring the opening goal in north London. With his pace, trickery and directness, the diminutive winger tormented the Spurs backline, which seemingly impressed the N17 chiefs.
However, former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson thinks the Hammers will not sell Summerville to Tottenham in this winter transfer window. This is because they are in a relegation dogfight at the moment, and the potential departure of Lucas Paqueta to Flamengo.
“Well, I think it’d be surprising if West Ham were trying to sell anybody. I think the question for West Ham is do you want to strengthen to try and avoid relegation?” Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider.
“The win last weekend against Spurs obviously is a bit of a game changer in that it brings them right back into the mix. But as we talked about, the number of teams that they can finish above are diminishing.
“I can’t see how they’re in a position to sell one of their better players in January, especially given the situation with Paqueta, so I’d be really surprised if the Summerville deal happens, but it’s got the look of a player for some reason that they want to sell.”
The 5 G/A Summerville has come to life of late, delivering three goal contributions in the last three games. He followed up his strike against Tottenham by opening the scoring in the Hammers’ 3-1 win over Sunderland at the weekend. The Dutchman is quickly becoming untouchable in Nuno Espirito Santo’s side, which begs the question- why will the Irons sell Summerville to Spurs now?
It clearly does not make sense from West Ham’s point of view. They are battling to avoid relegation to the Championship, with Nuno Espirito Santo’s side currently five points from safety. And now that Paqueta looks likely to return to Flamengo, there is no way the West Ham board will weaken their squad further by sanctioning Summerville’s sale. That said, Tottenham must quickly switch their focus to other targets to bolster its wide department.
