Tottenham could only manage to bring in three players during the January transfer window, as the club raced against time to lure new faces to N17. The most notable signing was Conor Gallagher, who was brought in as a long-term replacement for Rodrigo Bentancur from Atletico Madrid. The North Londoners hijacked the deal at the eleventh hour and ensured that the midfielder made the switch to Hotspur Way on a long-term contract.
It is fair to say that the England international has instantly played an important role in an already depleted Spurs side. He has slotted straight into the starting eleven as a box-to-box midfielder capable of providing tenacity and energy in the middle of the park. To his credit, the 25-year-old has done well to add a different dynamic to the midfield department.
Gallagher’s signing was met with raised eyebrows, as fans remained unconvinced about whether he would be the right man to fix the problems in midfield. However, it is fair to say that the England international has looked solid and reliable in his limited appearances for the Lilywhites so far. He enjoyed a successful outing against Manchester City on Sunday, helping Spurs come back from the dead as they secured a 2-2 draw from nowhere.
Tottenham have often been overrun in midfield this season. It has been a glaring issue for Thomas Frank, who has struggled to add energy and tenacity in the middle of the park. However, the signing of Conor Gallagher means that the Lilywhites now have some much-needed legs in the centre. The England international can make an impact at both ends of the pitch, making him one of the first names on the team sheet since his arrival.
Sami Mokbel now believes that the 25-year-old could be a success at Spurs as they look to turn their Premier League fortunes around. Writing in his column for the BBC, Mokbel said,
“People might not agree with me, but I think Conor Gallagher to Tottenham will be seen as a success. I think they needed leaders in that squad and he’s certainly one of those. I think it’s unfortunate for them that they couldn’t get the Andy Robertson deal over the line. They’ve been crying out for a player like that for a while. But I think the Gallagher deal will be a successful deal because I think he’s an excellent player.”
Mokbel claims that Conor Gallagher will enjoy a successful stint at Tottenham. The journalist believes that the England international is a leader in the dressing room and understands what it takes to win silverware, making him a valuable addition to a squad that needs a winning mentality instilled in it. Mokbel also heaps praise on the 25-year-old’s footballing ability, claiming that Gallagher has everything required to make an instant impact for the North Londoners.
The onus now falls on the former Atletico Madrid star to hit the ground running and help the Lilywhites out of a sticky situation in the Premier League. If he continues to perform as he did against Manchester City, there is no doubt that the fans will embrace him as the campaign progresses. Gallagher will hope that he is deployed in his natural position and allowed to venture forward whenever the opportunity arises to make an impact.
Will we see the 25-year-old help Thomas Frank steady the ship at N17 in the coming months? Only time will tell. However, fans will hope that Gallagher adds a different dynamic in the middle of the park and forms a solid partnership with Xavi Simons in the final third.
