Juan Bernat rejected Manchester United

Manchester United are in the final stages of this summer’s transfer window with the club still aiming to improve its squad.

With six signings made this summer already, including Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Cristian Orozco, Michael Carrick’s squad has been improved in targeted positions.

Work behind the scenes to make other moves possible is still continuing, however, with United being linked to a number of possible targets.

Pio Esposito is among these with the club showing renewed interest in the Inter Milan striker and even scouting him during pre-season.

It remains to be seen where United will be able to pull off the moves, although he remains open to a Premier League switch.

Whilst focus is on the future, however, some are looking back at the past. Juan Bernat is amongst these with him looking back at his career in an interview with Spanish outlet AS.

Speaking to the publication, Bernat revealed that he rejected an offer from Manchester United, saying: “I had an offer from Manchester United when I left for Benfica.

“However, my plan was to return to Spain, and when they contacted me to see if I was interested, I said no.

“Had I received the offer, I don’t know what I would have decided. I wanted to return, but in the end, nothing came of it, and on the last day of the transfer window, I ended up going to Portugal.”

He also said: “I’ve always liked them, and United has always been one of my favorite teams. But I knew I wanted to return to Spain.

“I waited until the very end of the transfer window, and at that point, I didn’t want to go to England.”

Juan Bernat currently plays for Spanish club Eibar but had a loan spell at Benfica during the 2023/24 season.

It is likely, therefore, that the offer from Manchester United came in the late stages of the 2023 transfer window when the club were managed by Erik Ten Hag.
