After securing a confident away victory against Brighton in the Premier League last weekend, Arsenal’s dreams of winning the first league title in 20 years are now one step closer to becoming a reality. As it currently stands, Arsenal is sitting on top of the Premier League table with 71 points earned in 31 games.
The Gunners share the same points with the other title contenders, Liverpool, but enjoy an important advantage over them in goal difference. Manchester City, is also breathing down the necks of both teams with 70 points in third place and is very much on in the Premier League’s intense title race.
The Gunners find themselves in their current exciting situation largely due to Kai Havertz and his performances on the pitch.
A versatile offensive player from Germany, Havertz set the start to his career in England in 2020, moving to Chelsea from Bayer Leverkusen, his boyhood club, for 80 million euros. His technique with the ball, playmaking skills and ability to play as a winger or attacker in the centre came out clear when he played for Bayer. As Chelsea sought a needed boost to their front line after Eden Hazard’s departure to Spain, the club’s management saw great value in the transfer of a young and talented German player.
Despite an individually uneven debut season with the Blues and against all odds, Havertz scored Chelsea’s most important goal since 2012. His game-winning goal in the Champions League final against Manchester City was the only goal he netted in the 2020/21 Champions League tournament. The historic goal allowed Chelsea to clinch their second-ever Champions League trophy.
Although there was a lack of consistency in Havertz’s performances in his first season at Chelsea, he managed to truly show up in some of the most important matches of the campaign. Chelsea’s fresh attacking trio consisting of Timo Werner, Mason Mount, and Havertz proved that they could produce when it mattered the most.
Havertz’s performance and consistency problems became more acute and apparent in Chelsea’s frustrating 2022/23 season, which the club might want to forget. A 12th place Premier League finish and poor overall performances in other competitions made it evident that the whole team needed restructuring to change the flawed direction.
As part of the team rebuilding process, Chelsea transferred Havertz to Arsenal, their London rivals, for the reported 65 million pounds in the summer of 2023. Football fans were quick to react with disbelief and memes. Many could not wrap their heads around the transfer, questioning its logic and laughing it off. However, as the season unfolded, Havertz proved that he could be a very valuable player on the pitch.
The numbers Havertz has generated for Arsenal are not insane, especially by modern football standards. However, with time, Arsenal’s coach Mikel Arteta found a way to take the most out of Havertz on a football pitch. Havertz’s role under Arteta’s guidance in Arsenal’s starting 11 is instrumental and is not just about goals and assists.
Mainly playing as a false nine and dropping back to a central midfield position, when necessary, Havertz and his movements on the field often create more space and play for his teammates, which allows Arsenal’s offensive style to prosper.
Havertz has also demonstrated that he is capable of being the main man in the conclusion of Arsenal’s attacks, scoring crucial goals and providing important assists. His recent form has been superb, as he has recorded five goals and four assists in his last eight Premier League appearances.
Havertz’s current form can serve as a great aid to Arsenal for the remainder of the season, both in the UEFA Champions League and Premier League, where lie the team’s dreams of historic glory.

The Alexander Isak transfer saga has intensified over the past 24 hours, with the Newcastle United striker making his position unmistakably clear. “When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can’t continue," the Swedish international posted on Instagram. He added that his desire to leave St. James’ Park was communicated long ago and insisted a move is “in the best interests of everyone.” The growing rift was further underlined when Isak skipped the PFA Team of the Season ceremony despite being named in the XI. Newcastle responded with a firm statement of its own, denying that any assurances had been made to sanction his exit. The club stressed that Isak remains under contract and that a sale would only be considered if certain conditions, like securing an adequate replacement, are met. Liverpool, meanwhile, continues to circle. An opening bid of around £110M ($148.3M) was rejected, but reports now suggest the Premier League champions are preparing an offer closer to £130M ($175.3M). Such a figure would eclipse the British transfer record, though Newcastle is reportedly holding out for closer to £150M ($202.2M). The stand-off is beginning to take its toll internally. Isak has refused to take part in preseason, sat out the opening league fixture and has been training away from the first-team group, clear signals of his frustration. Captain Bruno Guimaraes, in contrast, appeared to show solidarity with the club by posting an image of himself in Newcastle colors on social media. All eyes now turn to Aug. 25, when Newcastle hosts Liverpool in what is shaping up to be a pivotal fixture both on and off the pitch. The outcome of that contest, and the negotiations leading into it, could determine whether Newcastle dig in or relent under the weight of Liverpool’s record-breaking intent. For Newcastle, the decision is stark. It could bank a huge fee that could reshape the squad, or risk prolonging a damaging standoff with its star striker. For Isak, the next steps may finally decide whether his future lies on Tyneside or elsewhere.
Shaquille O'Neal and Dwight Howard patched things up Sunday after years of feuding. But even while describing their rapprochement, O'Neal couldn't keep from teasing his longtime nemesis. The "Big Aristotle" was at the BIG3 playoffs Sunday to watch Howard's L.A. Riot play the Chicago Triplets. In the middle of describing to Rachel Nichols how he and Howard had made peace, O'Neal broke off his explanation to make fun of Howard for missing a dunk. The two Hall of Fame centers had sparred for years, despite their common ground as former members of the Orlando Magic and Los Angeles Lakers. Some of the tension seemed to be due to Howard adopting O'Neal's "Superman" nickname, though O'Neal claimed to Nichols that he was simply being tough on Howard to motivate him. That explanation doesn't account for the time O'Neal mocked Howard for playing basketball in the Taiwanese league or the decade-plus he's spent roasting Howard on his podcast, in public appearances and on "Inside the NBA." Still, it appears that the two have made peace. Despite O'Neal being left off the original list of presenters, he insisted that he'll be among a group of Hall of Famers inducting Howard Sept. 6, including Dominique Wilkins, Robert Parish, Dennis Rodman and Patrick Ewing. It means that two of the most dominant big men of their eras have finally buried the hatchet. It's added a new level of interest to the Hall of Fame ceremonies, and it should be a sweet moment between O'Neal and Howard. As long as Howard doesn't mention Superman.
Injuries continue to be the pitfall for the Indiana Fever this season. Per ESPN, Fever guard Sophie Cunningham has been ruled out for the rest of the season following a knee injury she suffered in Indiana's 99-93 win over the Connecticut Sun on Sunday. The injury comes with nine games left in the regular season for the Fever. At 19-16, Indiana has the third-best record in the Eastern Conference and is set to make a playoff push this summer. The Fever have been without second-year star Caitlin Clark since July 15, as the guard has been dealing with a groin injury. The team hopes she can return in the regular season, but Indiana could be significantly shorthanded on offense until her return. Cunningham has averaged 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 30 games played this season. She has been crucial as a rotational player, averaging 25.2 minutes for the Fever. The 29-year-old became an early darling of the WNBA this season for standing up for Clark both on and off the court. Cunningham recently signed a podcast deal with Colin Cowherd. The good news for Cunningham is that she is expected to make a full recovery. However, the injury will crush what could have been a special season for the Fever if and when Clark returns.
Speculation linking Dallas Cowboys All-Pro edge-rusher Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers continues to gain momentum as the star’s holdout amid stalled contract negotiations seems as far apart as ever. Parsons, two weeks ago, publicly requested a trade and continues to hold-in during Cowboys training camp, while there is a belief that Green Bay is attempting to pull off a blockbuster trade. Potential Packers-Micah Parsons Blockbuster Trade Package Parsons, 26, has posted 52.5 sacks through his first four seasons and is one of the most dominant players at his position. He is the kind of difference-maker who could cement Green Bay as a legitimate Super Bowl contender for years to come. But prying Parsons away from the Cowboys wouldn’t come cheap. "You’d want to hope to trade no more than three good young players for one elite player," an NFL executive and former general manager said to me recently of what a Parsons trade package might look like. Given that strategy, it isn’t difficult to envision Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst offering a package of players and picks that looks something like: Packers Trade: 2026 first-round NFL Draft choice, 2027 first-round draft choice, WR Romeo Doubs, EDGE Lukas Van Ness Cowboys Trade: Micah Parsons Trading two first-round picks is likely the starting point for Jerry Jones and the Cowboys in any Parsons negotiations. For the Packers, trading Van Ness would be offering a change of scenery for a former first-round draft choice who has yet to live up to expectations, and upgrading the position with a Defensive Player of the Year-caliber player. Meanwhile, shipping Doubs to Dallas clears a logjam at wide receiver, while helping the Cowboys round out a balanced receiving corps that would include CeeDee Lamb, George Pickens and Doubs as perhaps the most prolific collection of talent Dak Prescott has had in his career. Whether Parsons’ trade request is anything more than posturing remains to be seen, but if the Cowboys open up trade talks, this package could be the kind of trade that nets Green Bay a difference-maker.
