After the return of Malick Thiaw, there is more positive news from the Milan treatment centre, as Pierre Kalulu has resumed training, but Davide Calabria will miss Rennes.

The Rossoneri had their defence decimated by injuries towards the end of 2023, leading them to recall Matteo Gabbia from a season-long loan at Villarreal to plug the gaps.

That crisis is beginning to calm down, as Thiaw made his first start since tearing his hamstring in mid-November, although he then made two costly errors in the 4-2 Serie A defeat to Monza.

Now Kalulu has resumed training for the first time since he tore a muscle on October 29, although it was only partially with the rest of the group.

The next centre-back expected to slowly get back towards the squad is Fikayo Tomori, who has been out of action since December 23.

However, the bad news for coach Stefano Pioli is that Calabria is still struggling with the muscular problem he sustained the week before against Napoli.

The captain is not expected to recover in time to face Rennes on Thursday in the second leg of the Europa League play-off, so Alessandro Florenzi or Filippo Terracciano will step in at right-back.
