Kasper Schmeichel Treble glory can send message to his Danish critics

The Denmark keeper Schmeichel was injured in Portugal during the last international break and had to sit out a key part of the season as Viljami Sinisalo stood in for the Great Dane. Kasper returned for the recent win over Hibs and then against St Mirren at the weekend, where he picked up a well deserved Scottish Premiership winners medal to go alongside his Premier League gong.

The Celtic keeper reflects on his recovery from injury, shares some incredible stories from his career so far and looks ahead to this weekend’s Scottish Cup final on the Official Celtic FC Podcast. It’s well worth a listen.

Schmeichel, who has well over 100 international caps for Denamark, looks back on his time with his national team so far, speaks about his pride at reaching the 2020 UEFA Euro semi-final and shares his admiration for the medical staff who saved Christian Eriksen’s life after his cardiac arrest at that same tournament.

He also shares his memories of winning the English Premier League title with Leicester City back in 2016 and reveals what was, in his opinion, that side’s secret ingredient as they reached the summit of English football.

Despite the recent personal abuse that he suffered back home in Denmark from hacks and pundits, Schmeichel reckons there’s no way he’ll be giving up playing for his country anytime soon.

“I love playing for Denmark,” he said. “When I was growing up, that was the dream. When I was a kid and I was visualising in the garden, I was visualising the stadium and wearing the Denmark shirt.”

“So, to play for your country, to have played as many games as I have, to have captained my country, that, for me, is the ultimate thing that you can do as a footballer.”

“To still have the opportunity, still have the ability, the drive, the love to do it, I wouldn’t give that up. Definitely not.”

Kasper Schmeichel will be looking to complete his Scottish treble against Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup Final, then he post a photo of his three medals on his instagram account and let his Danish critics know that he’s a winner and he’s not finished yet.
