After a disappointing 2024/25 Premier League campaign, Spurs have been very active in the transfer market, looking for incomings who can bolster their side and help them have a far better season this year. However, they are now ensuring that they will retain one of the few players who had an exceptional season in 2025. Tottenham Hotspur are in talks with Djed Spence over a new contract.

Tottenham Hotspur Send New Contract Proposal for 2025 Star Player

Current Deal Expires in 2028

Sami Mokbel, of the BBC, has revealed that Tottenham have “opened talks” with Spence over a new contract extension. Whilst his current deal does not expire until 2028, they will likely want to ensure that he is happy at the club: his initial contract was signed in 2022 after joining from Middlesbrough, and therefore probably won’t be the most lucrative.

After a season in which he became “undroppable” as one of Spurs’ star players, they won’t want his head being turned. Fabrizio Romano reports that a new contract proposal has been sent to the player. He is “keen on accepting”, fans will be glad to hear. Talks are underway to get this deal agreed.

Djed Spence Will Be Crucial to Tottenham Hotspur This Season

Spence was an extremely important player in the second half of last season, as he played a key role in their route to the Europa League final, and was one of the few players to excel in the league. As the Lilywhites won their first trophy in 17 years, they qualified for the Champions League; with two games a week in equally demanding competitions, this is where Spence’s talents will truly benefit new manager Thomas Frank.

Spence particularly impressed at left-back, despite being a natural right-back. Tottenham have Pedro Porro available at right-back and Destiny Udogie at left-back, though both suffered injuries last year. In order to keep the defence as injury-free as possible, following a horror show under Ange Postecoglou, Spence could be perfect to rotate in both positions to give their starters rest; last season, midfielder Archie Gray ended up filling in on the right (and at centre-back!).

However, even aside from providing squad depth, the Englishman could be pretty crucial regardless. He may well start over Udogie, particularly in the Champions League. At 24-years-old, he will be one to keep around for the future.
