Tottenham Hotspur are preparing for their biggest game of the season on Thursday evening with the hope of earning a place in the final four of the Europa League.
The Lilywhites go into the second leg against Eintracht Frankfurt level on aggregate after a sixth-minute Hugo Ekitike strike was cancelled out by Pedro Porro’s equaliser in the 28th minute. If the North Londoners are to beat Frankfurt, they will need their senior stars to step up.
The 4-2 Premier League defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux on Sunday further put pressure on Ange Postecoglou. It was the worst preparation his team could have had ahead of the big European clash in Frankfurt, with defensive lapses and errors pitting their downfall yet again.
Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario and defender Cristian Romero endured disastrous afternoons in the 4-2 defeat to Wolves. The Spurs No.1’s flailing attempts at saves put the visitors in disarray, as the first two goals Wolves scored were almost entirely down to his catastrophic errors. As a result, he unsurprisingly attracted a lot of criticism from the fans and pundits after the Wolves defeat.
Cristian Romero was at fault for Tottenham conceding the third goal. He was dispossessed by Rayan Ait-Nouri just outside his own 18-yard box, with the wing-back squaring it across the box to Jorgen Strand Larsen for an easy tap-in. The Argentine defender dropped his head in frustration as the Wanderers restored their two-goal buffer.
During his pre-match duties on Wednesday afternoon, Ange Postecoglou was asked about Guglielmo Vicario and Romero’s reaction to Sunday’s mistakes on the training field. To which, the Spurs boss told Football London:
“It was a tough afternoon and they were disappointed. But the thing about both of them is they don’t shy away from that responsibility. They owned up to it, the mistakes were on them but once we reviewed it and put it to bed, they trained the next day with the mentality you expect them to as leaders and experienced players.
“I guess if they were going to make errors like that, it’s better they did it on Sunday than tomorrow night. It’s better they don’t make them at all but they’re human beings, these things happen. Both have got a really good mentality, they’re both strong leaders, they’re both strong individuals.
“They weren’t hiding away from the fact that they made those mistakes, they owned up to them which is no surprise to me. And I think they’ll go out tomorrow night not thinking about that but, again, thinking about the opportunity for us.”
Ange has throughout his Spurs tenure has refused to single out individuals and throw his players under the bus. In good times or bad times, the 59-year-old has often been calm and composed in pressers and backed his players to improve and perform better in every game.
It wasn’t different after the Wolves defeat either with regards to Romero and Vicario, as the Australian boss stated that collective defensive lapses were the reason for the chastening afternoon in the Black County rather than individual mistakes. Now, once again, Ange has supported the duo in the midst of tough times with the expectation that they step up to the plate and perform as leaders in the club’s biggest game of the season on Thursday. Let’s hope both Vicario and Romero produce flawless performances and help Tottenham overcome Frankfurt to qualify for the competition’s semi-finals.
