Tottenham Hotspur vice-captain Cristian Romero has struggled with injuries this season. The Argentina international has not featured prominently in Ange Postecoglou’s second season at the club. This has forced Big Ange to play youngsters and inexperienced players in the heart of the defence for majority of the campaign. It is clear to that the results and performances have taken a toll due to this.
Romero joined the Lilywhites from Atalanta on an initial loan in 2021. But an impressive campaign in the following year saw the Argentine defender earn a permanent move to N17. The 26-year-old has not looked back since and has become one of the key players for the North London club.
However, this season has been far from ideal for the centre-back. The Spurs No.17 has managed to feature in only 23 games in all competitions for Ange’s side. The Argentine has kept only three clean sheets in that time and managed to score a single goal. It has been a season to forget for both the club, as well as, Romero.
The last thing Tottenham need right now is another controversy. The Lilywhites are already in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons in recent weeks, and they do not need more fuel to add to the fire. With Spurs not being able to grind out results in the Premier League, many fans have felt frustrated with the players and have called for a major overhaul in the summer.
Now, Cristian Romero has come out and released a statement that will not be music to the ears of Tottenham fans. The Spurs No.17 told Gaston Edul,
“We’re in the Europa League semi-finals, I want to finish the season on a high note. After that, we’ll see. A league I would like to play in would be Spain to compete in all the major leagues.”

“Estamos en semifinales de Europa League y quiero terminar la temporada de la mejor manera. Después de eso se verá, en mi cabeza siempre está crecer y buscar nuevos lugares donde seguir creciendo”.

The centre-back has directly hinted at a potential exit from N17 amid uncertain future. Earlier reports suggested that Romero was looking to head out in the summer after the interests from Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid had emerged. It looks like a deal with one of the Spanish giants will surely go through now after this statement was released by the 26-year-old.
It would be understandable if the Lilywhites take some action against the talented centre-back. Spurs have a season-defining tie in the Europa League semi-finals coming up, and the last thing the club needs is an unwanted distraction. The fans would also not want someone who is not completely committed to the club in the starting eleven.
The timing of the interview was wrong and it is fair to say that it was a lapse in judgement by Cristian Romero. What action will Ange Postecoglou take against the Argentine defender? Only time will tell.
