It has been a tough season and a half for Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo
Mainoo burst onto the scene in the 2023/24 season under Erik ten Hag, making 32 appearances for the club.
He also became a regular starter for England as they reached the final of UEFA Euro 2024.
United sacked ten Hag in October 2024 and he was replaced by Ruben Amorim.
Mainoo saw his minutes decline significantly since the former Sporting Lisbon manager’s arrival.
He came off the bench in United’s 4-1 away win against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday night, a far cry from his last minute heroics at the same stadium in January 2024.
His lack of minutes have led to many people feeling his time at the club is over, whether this is on loan or on a permanent deal.
Football Italia have reported that Napoli Director of Sport Giovanni Manna stated how the Italian club will ‘make the right evaluations’ around Mainoo.
The move would come at an ideal time for Napoli, who would want to get the deal done as soon as possible given their current injury issues.
Stanislav Lobotka, Billy Gilmour, Kevin De Bruyne, Andre Frank Zambo Anguissa, Miguel Gutierrez and Romelu Lukaku arę all missing through injury.
Manna spoke on their interest to Sky Sport Italia.
“He is a player who has been linked to Napoli since August, also for his age, his potential, and the transfer opportunity.
“This team is doing well, it is consolidated. We have some important absences right now, but sooner or later the lads will return, strong and determined.
“We have to make the right evaluations, so we’ll see how things progress along the way.”
Napoli have won just two games in the Champions League this season but remain in second place and behind AC Milan by virtue of goal difference.
Mainoo’s addition could be one that guides them towards retaining their Serie A crown.
