Kobbie Mainoo is back in the Manchester United first team.
Under Ruben Amorim, Mainoo found opportunities limited.
Prior to Ruben Amroim’s departure, Mainoo had played just 212 minutes across 13 appearances, an average of 16.30 minutes per game.
However, Mainoo started Man United’s 2-0 win over Manchester City on the weekend as goals from Bryan Mbuemo and Patrick Dorgu secured the derby win.
The United fanbase found themselves bemused as to the reasons for Mainoo’s absence.
His return to the starting lineup under interim boss Michael Carrick will give them hope that he can once again be the heart of United’s midfield.
Mainoo had a breakthrough season in 2023/24, managing to earn a place in England’s European Championship squad as they reached the final.
His performances declined under Erik ten Hag the following season prior to the Dutchman’s dismissal.
Furthermore, the arrival of Amorim signalled the beginning of a frustrated relationship between the pair.
Now under Carrick, Mainoo’s future could be about to be settled after a difficult 12 months.
Sky’s Rob Dorsett has posted that United are ready to open contract talks with Kobbie Mainoo.
In light of Casemiro’s announced departure at the end of the season, United are reported to want to tie down a midfielder for the future, with Mainoo targeted as that player.
The future of fellow defensive midfielder Manuel Ugarte is also in doubt, and a depature could be even more likely should Mainoo secure his future.
Excl: #mufc ready to open new contract talks with Kobbie Mainoo. Big decision made over Casemiro today, and I’m told United want to tie down another midfielder who is key for the future. One of lowest earners in the first team, new deal would bring him more in line with teammates
