It seems Kylian Mbappé could miss Real Madrid’s meeting with Real Sociedad this weekend, as he is currently suffering discomfort in his left knee. The Frenchman’s absence would be a major blow for Madrid, who are currently chasing reigning champions Barcelona at the summit of the LaLiga table. Early indications suggest Mbappé may also be out for next week’s crucial Champions League clash against Benfica, although there hasn’t yet been any official communication with regards to the length of his potential lay-off.
Having sprained the same knee just over a month ago, there will be genuine concern that this may develop into a recurring issue. Given his explosive pace and dynamic playing style, an injury of this nature could prove particularly debilitating. The talented frontman originally incurred a problem over the winter break, leading him to miss Real Madrid’s hammering of Real Betis just after the turn of the year. However, Mbappé returned to action the following week, featuring as a late substitute in last month’s Super Copa final in Jeddah.
Although he hasn’t participated in group training sessions over the past two days, Mbappé continues to conduct light gym work independently. This will perhaps provide a small crumb of comfort for Álvaro Arbeloa, who will be desperate to keep his prized asset available as his team continues to battle on both domestic and continental fronts.
Mbappé is currently enjoying a remarkable goalscoring run, having netted in each of his last nine starts across all competitions. He’s also averaged just over a goal per game in his 22 LaLiga appearances this term, making him the division’s top scorer by some distance.
