Fan campaign causes Galaxy, president to part ways

L.A. Galaxy parts ways with president Chris Klein after orchestrated fan campaign

L.A. Galaxy president Chris Klein never wanted to overstay his welcome. He and the club had an agreement: if the Galaxy were unable to make the MLS playoffs in 2023, he would step down and let someone else try their hand at running things.

But with the club dead last in the Western Conference standings after fifteen games in 2023, fans were ready for a change--and they weren't shy about letting Klein and the Galaxy know.

Today, those fans finally got their way--and showed the immense power they wield in MLS, too. The Galaxy fired Klein this morning on the back of months of coordinated fan protests lamenting his leadership style.

"As a club we have not achieved our goals or met the standard that we have established for the LA Galaxy," AEG president Dan Beckerman said of the decision to fire Klein. "We believe it is in the best interests of the club to make a change."

Klein's unpopularity stems from the Galaxy's precipitous recent decline. The team has won five MLS Cups--more than any other franchise--but has been unable to compete in the modern MLS system under Klein's leadership.

Moreover, the club has failed to understand new MLS rules. The club was formally sanctioned by MLS for inappropriate transfer behavior in 2022; as a result the club lost $1M of General Allocation money (GAM), paid a $1M fine and was banned from registering new foreign players in 2023.

All of this has created a toxic environment at the once-great club and, perhaps most unforgivably, placed them well behind local rivals LAFC.
While fans will not be sad to see Klein's back, the situation remains less than ideal.

Soccer operations will now be overseen by Galaxy head coach Greg Vanney, a close associate of Klein's and another frequent target of fan anger. Vanney will have to distance himself from Klein and work hard to regain the support and respect of the Galaxy fanbase.

After last weekend's tough loss to Charlotte FC, fans stayed behind to shout "we want better" at Vanney and a few of his key players.

There's a lot of rebuilding ahead of the Galaxy, and the playoffs appear to be a distant dream this season. But with one of the largest and most frustrating roadblocks removed in the firing of Klein, fans may see this as an opportunity to dream big again.

With a new MLS franchise popping up soon in Southern California, that opportunity could be crucial for the long-term future of the Galaxy.
