Tottenham Hotspur head coach Thomas Frank is keen to add to his attacking options at White Hart Lane this summer and is assessing several different targets.
Spurs have already turned Mathys Tel’s loan from Bayern Munich into a permanent deal, whilst acquiring the services of Mohammed Kudus from West Ham United. They have been working on a deal to sign Morgan Gibbs-White, although the move is currently being blocked by Nottingham Forest.
The North London heavyweights have now turned their attention elsewhere, with chairman Daniel Levy plotting an ambitious move to sign Real Madrid star Rodrygo.
Rodrygo has proven that he is one of the world’s best wingers, and until recently, he was one of the untouchables in the current roster at Real Madrid. Under new boss Xabi Alonso, the Brazilian barely featured at the Club World Cup with priority given to Vinicius Jr and Kylian Mbappe. Having played just 27 minutes in the glitz and glamour tournament, the 24-year-old seems open to ending his time at the Santiago Bernabeu, given that he is unlikely to be a first-choice option for Xabi Alonso’s side next season.
The battle to sign Rodrygo from Real Madrid remains intense, with Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Bayern Munich all in the mix. Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is hoping to use his good relationship with Madrid to lower the player’s asking price of around £78 million.
Rodrygo is heading towards the exit door following Alonso’s appointment at Madrid, and unsurprisingly there is no shortage of interest. While the Brazil international would be a statement signing from the Lilywhites given his ability, potential, winning mentality and rich European pedigree, a deal would be very difficult given the costs involved. Not only will they have to splash a premium, but also offer him massive wages.
This is the view of La Liga expert and editor of Football Espana Ruaridh Barlow. He feels Rodrygo would command a salary north of £8.6million per year, and Spurs may have to pay over the odds to land his signature.
“Rodrygo is reportedly on a £8.6m salary per year already, so they would probably need to pay more than that,” Ruaridh Barlow exclusively told Tottenham News.
“If he leaves, it is partly because he wants to be the main man elsewhere, and taking a wage cut doesn’t fit with that.
“Given Tottenham have not been competing for titles in recent years, and their finishing position last season, the honest opinion is that Spurs would have to pay over the odds to convince Rodrygo of a move, especially if Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool are in the frame.”
Signing a player in the ilk of Rodrygo would be a statement of intent from Tottenham, who are set to compete in the Champions League next season after winning the Europa League trophy back in May. The South American can play across the front-line, and he would undoubtedly enhance Thomas Frank’s attacking unit.
Should Son Heung-min depart this summer, Spurs could save a lot from his wages and also get a decent fee. Levy could use those funds to hand the Madrid ace a lucrative contract, and if we are to go by the La Liga expert’s £8.6m salary per year claim, which is more than £166,000 a week, Tottenham must not hesitate to pay a bit over the odds because he is a special player. To replace a club legend like Son, Rodrygo would just be perfect.
