Diego Luna has perhaps been the most discussed soccer star in the United States after Lionel Messi as of late. The young American impressed everyone with his performances for the national team during the Gold Cup. Mauricio Pochettino is eager to revamp his side heading into the World Cup, and Luna could be one of his top stars.
Many experts feel the player could add a fresh breath of air to the team, but as of now, there is nothing certain about his spot on the team.
Former American star Landon Donovan divided the internet following his latest take, claiming Luna has a better chance of confirming his spot on the national team if he remains playing in Major League Soccer. This came as a surprise to many as multiple USMNT top stars currently play across top European clubs.
Former American legend Eric Wynalda has been one of those who have never shied away from speaking their mind. The former USMNT star ripped into Landon Donovan following his suggestion to Diego Luna to remain playing in Major League Soccer.
Wynalda, on his Unleashed with Eric Wynalda show on GOLZ TV, claimed, “I know Landon wants Diego Luna to stay [in MLS] and be a star. Remember when Landon tried to tell us Christian Pulisic should come back? Stop polluting minds because it’s getting f*cking annoying. Nobody believes that, Landon. Nobody even comes close to believing that this place is the best place to get ready for a World Cup.”
The USMNT legend then urged Donovan to stop with his baseless claims, as things are getting out of hand. Wynalda stated, “You’re trying to convince people that your career made sense. The bottom line is that we wanted you to be more. So don’t start chiming in to make the guys now less. Are we clear? Good. I don’t want to get into these fights, but there’s a big part of me that wants to stuff a sock in your mouth right now. It’s getting annoying as hell.”
While both men make some important points, it will be interesting to see what path Diego Luna walks on. The midfielder has emerged as one of the top talents in the country, attracting interest from clubs across Europe. However, whether Luna stays with MLS or embarks on a European adventure is a question only time will tell!
