It simply is all or nothing for Tottenham Hotspur when they take to the pitch to face Manchester United on Wednesday evening, with the winner securing not only the UEFA Europa League trophy but also a place in next season’s Champions League.
Ange Postecoglou has spoken about always winning trophies during his second season in charge of other clubs. The Australian tactician will be raring to live up to his promise when his side takes to the field for the Europa League final in Bilbao. He has also given a fresh injury update on his Spurs side ahead of the showpiece event.
A lot is riding for the Lilywhites, who will want to end their 17-year long trophy drought at the San Mames Stadium. The players need no extra motivation to perform in this big European final.
Senior star Son Heung-min will have a chance to end his own title drought, and crown a decade of service for Tottenham, when his team takes on Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United. He will be raring to make history with the North Londoner son May 21, after an unacceptable domestic season.
There has been a lot of speculation surrounding the South Korean’s future as he enters the final year of his contract at White Hart Lane. When asked whether it will be his chance to win a trophy at Tottenham, Son Heung-min said in his pre-match press conference (h/t Football London).
“The future we never know. Next year we might play in the Champions League. The chance that I have now is real. It’s a fact. It’s a final, a Europa League final. I’m not thinking whether this is my last chance to win a trophy here or just another chance.”
Son was a part of the Tottenham side that lost the 2019 Champions League final to Liverpool, so he is desperately hoping to end the club’s long wait for silverware against a United side also struggling badly in domestically.
The 32-year-old recently recovered from a foot injury that had kept him out of action for seven games. Having him fit and available for this fixture is a big lift for Ange’s side due to his quality, leadership and experience. Our skipper is wary that this is a golden opportunity to get his icy hands on a trophy and will be firing his teammates to be mentally and physically ready for the titanic battle.
If there is one player who deserves to win a trophy, it is none other than our legendary Son.
