Lazio veteran Pedro Rodriguez is set for a spell on the sidelines after sustaining an ankle injury during the Coppa Italia tie against Bologna.

The 38-year-old suffered the knock during the final minutes of the contest. He appeared to be in great pain as he hobbled off the pitch, assisted by members of the club’s medical staff, while the home supporters at the Renato Dall’Ara applauded the legendary winger in sign of respect for the player and his elusive career achievements.

Fortunately for Lazio, Pedro’s replacement, Tijjani Noslin, scored the all-important equaliser, as the team went on to prevail in penalty shootouts. After the contest, Maurizio Sarri insisted that the Spaniard’s condition isn’t too serious.

Nevertheless, Lazio confirmed that the player has suffered an injury in the right ankle through a statement released on the club’s official website on Friday.

Earlier this afternoon, following a consultation between the medical staff — Prof. Ivo Pulcini, Prof. Fabio Rodia and club doctor Italo Leo — S.S. Lazio issued the following statement.

Pedro underwent clinical and instrumental tests at Villa Mafalda Clinic. The examinations, carried out after the injury sustained during Bologna-Lazio, revealed a sprain-contusion trauma to his right ankle, with partial involvement of the external capsular-ligament complex.

The player has already begun a specific rehabilitation programme and will be monitored daily to determine his recovery timeline.

While the club abstained from predicting a timetable, Italian journalist Giulio Cardone revealed during his appearance on Radiosei that Pedro will most likely remain on the sidelines for around one month. This untimely blow ensued while Lazio are already without their captain, Mattia Zaccagni, leaving Sarri without his two main options on the left wing.

Noslin is thus expected to fill in on the left side against Atalanta on Saturday, as Zaccagni isn’t expected to return until early March. Daniel Maldini is another option for the role, but Sarri insists on fielding the 24-year-old Italian as a centre-forward.
