Lazio have been registering mediocre results since the start of the season. Last month, they suffered their heaviest defeat of the campaign, when they were humbled by Como, who scored three unanswered goals at the Stadio Olimpico. However, Maurizio Sarri’s men have been undefeated in their four following contests.
After an uninspiring stalemate in Lecce, they clinched a 3-2 win over Genoa thanks to Danilo Cataldi’s last-gasp spot-kick. Last weekend, they were a whisker away from escaping Turin with all three points in the bag, but Juventus salvaged a draw in the final minute. They’re currently 8th in the Serie A standings, with 33 points.
However, the Aquile have made it clear that the Coppa Italia is now their main objective, so Maurizio Sarri was thrilled with his team’s qualification to the semi-finals after beating Bologna on penalties.
While Lazio had booked their place in the Coppa Italia semis on Wednesday, Atalanta did so last week with a resounding 3-0 victory over Juventus. They followed it up by clinging on to a goalless draw in Como on Sunday, despite being reduced to 10 men for the majority of the contest.
La Dea have been enjoying a major turnaround since Raffaele Palladino’s appointment in November. They made a major statement in January, beating Roma, Bologna, Torino, and Parma in league fixtures. They currently sit 7th in the table, six points ahead of Lazio.
Therefore, this can be considered a six-pointer for what could be a European spot, albeit only a Top 6 finish would guarantee continental football next season.
Lazio (4-3-3): Provedel; Marusic, Gila, Provstgaard, Pellegrini; Dele-Bashiru, Cataldi, Taylor; Isaksen, Maldini, Noslin.
Atalanta (3-4-2-1): Carnesecchi; Scalvini, Djmsiti, Kolasinac; Zappacosta, Ederson, De Roon, Zalewski; Samardzic, Raspadori; Krstovic.
Lazio’s home advantage could once again be hindered by the ongoing fan protest against Claudio Lotito, while Atalanta should be the fresher side after being afforded an entire week of rest. Nevertheless, the Orobici will have one eye on their upcoming battle against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League play-offs, which could prompt Palladino to rotate his lineup.
Since neither side holds a clear advantage, another draw could be on the cards.
