Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou has ended the club’s long-standing trophy drought this season

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has etched his name in the history books at N17 after managing to do the unthinkable this season. The Australian became only the third manager to lead the Lilywhites to European glory. The North London club beat Manchester United in the Europa League final to end their 17-year wait for a major trophy.

Winning the competition also meant that Spurs qualified for Champions league football next season. However, the domestic campaign has been a complete contrast of what the Lilywhites have achieved in the Europa League this season. Ange’s men finished the Premier League campaign just a place above the relegation zone, registering 22 losses along the way.

While many Tottenham fans do not care about the domestic campaign after securing the Europa league title, it is still important to address the issues faced by the club in the Premier League. It is fair to say that the European success should not overshadow the domestic failures after enduring a dismal Premier League campaign. The North London club even failed to hit the 40-point mark in the league this season.

Frank McAvennie urges Tottenham to sack Ange Postecoglou

There were clear indications during the Europa league trophy parade that the fans and the players still back Ange Postecoglou to be at the helm next season. The Australian was greeted with a huge applause during his victory speech and his chants were being sung by the fans for a long time. The Spurs boss is also adamant that he wants to stay at N17 next year after achieving Champions League football for next season.

Now, ex-Celtic star Frank McAvennie also believes that Spurs should sack Big Ange in the summer. Speaking on the Let Me Be Frank podcast, McAvennie said,

“No Listen 22 games [he’s lost]. I know there’s a lot of problems with injuries but everyone has injury problems. I know a lot of Tottenham fans that say, ‘Thanks very much Ange but it’s time to go now.’ because the league was disgraceful. They could have got relegated any other season. But to get 38 points for a team like Tottenham it’s not even close to being good enough.”

Frank McAvennie pointed out that Tottenham have lost 22 Premier League games this season and deemed it to be unacceptable. The ex-Celtic star believes that a lot of Spurs fans would also want Ange Postecoglou to leave the club after a disastrous domestic campaign. McAvennie also insisted that the Lilywhites could have been relegated in any other season as they did not even reach the 40-point mark this season.

Now, Daniel Levy must make sure that the managerial situation is sorted out quickly before the transfer window opens. The North London club cannot afford to get complacent and all eyes will be on Levy as he makes the decision regarding Big Ange’s future. It was reported earlier last week that the Spurs chairman was leaning towards sacking the ex-Celtic boss even after the Europa League success.

If that still stands true then Levy would need to act quick and relieve Ange Postecoglou from his duties at N17. The Lilywhites need to find a replacement as well to replace Big Ange at the helm. Former Ajax boss Francesco Farioli and Fulham boss Marco Silva remain the leading candidates to takeover the reigns at Hotspur Way as Spurs look to kickstart a new era.
