Leeds United return to Premier League action to take on Newcastle United at Elland Road, where Daniel Farke’s side will look to get back on track after a difficult week. Leeds’ 5-0 defeat away at Arsenal in their previous league game was compounded by a disastrous midweek cup exit at the hands of Sheffield Wednesday, leaving them in dire need of a positive result to rebuild some confidence.

How Leeds Have Lined Up Recently

Lucas Perri remains the club’s undisputed first-choice goalkeeper, but the Brazilian endured a tough afternoon against the Gunners last time out. It was a similarly torrid affair for Farke’s favoured centre-back partnership of Pascal Struijk and Joe Rodon, who had looked very assured against Everton on the opening day.

Jayden Bogle and Gabriel Gudmundsson were selected at full-back, although the signing of James Justin, who is capable of playing at both left and right-back, will give the Whites some much-needed reinforcement in that area. With captain Ethan Ampadu injured, Farke opted for Ilia Gruev at the base of midfield, but it was a tough assignment for the Bulgarian to deal with players such as Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice.

Anton Stach and Ao Tanaka completed the midfield three, but the latter’s MCL injury is likely to keep him out of the side for the foreseeable future. It was a highly disappointing outing for Leeds’ attack, which consisted of Willy Gnonto, Daniel James, and Joel Piroe, who managed just one shot on target in 90 minutes.

Despite replenishing their attack with several new signings, the Whites’ forward line was similarly poor against Sheffield Wednesday in midweek, with new boy Dominic Calvert-Lewin having a particularly awful debut.

Leeds Recent Form and Tactics

After returning to the Premier League with a hard-fought victory over Everton, Leeds’ season has taken a turn for the worse. The club would never expect to come out of an away trip to the Emirates with a result, but they were utterly put to the sword by Mikel Arteta’s men, and looked particularly vulnerable from set-pieces.

This is an ominous sign as Newcastle possesses significant aerial prowess, particularly in the form of 6’7” Dan Burn, who will need to be marked extremely tightly.

Another area Leeds need to improve is in front of goal, with the club distinctly lacking in both creativity and ruthlessness throughout their first three games of the season. However, the combination of a roaring Elland Road crowd and the absences of Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon could spur the Whites to a memorable victory.

Leeds Absences to Consider

As previously mentioned, Tanaka has suffered an MCL injury and will be out for several weeks. Fellow midfield stalwart Ampadu is also unavailable until after the international break due to a knee issue.

New £17 million winger Noah Okafor, who was a rare bright spark against Wednesday, is also a doubt after suffering a groin injury and will require a late fitness test.
