Legendary Inter President Massimo Moratti is in intensive care in hospital in Milan suffering from breathing difficulties and pneumonia.

The icon of Nerazzurri history celebrated his 80th birthday in May and has been a heavy smoker for many years.

According to multiple sources including La Gazzetta dello Sport and Sportitalia, the doctors are confident his condition is not currently critical.

However, he was having severe enough difficulties breathing autonomously that he was intubated and put into intensive care at the Istituto Humanitas di Rozzano hospital.

Moratti forever entwined with Inter history

An Inter supporter since childhood, when his father Angelo was in charge of the club that won the European Cup in the 1960s, Massimo Moratti took over ownership from Ernesto Pellegrini in 1995.

He oversaw the legendary achievement of winning the Treble in 2010, the Champions League, Scudetto and Coppa Italia in a single season under coach Jose Mourinho.

In total, Moratti won 16 trophies at Inter before selling the club to Erick Thohir in 2013.

He was seen as a father figure at the club by the likes of Ronaldo, Adriano and Alvaro Recoba.
