Lewis Hall agrees five year contract with club

Lewis Hall has agreed a new five-year contract after spending the summer at the centre of significant interest from Manchester United.

Left-back was one of the positions Michael Carrick and the recruitment team wanted to strengthen before the transfer deadline, despite Luke Shaw remaining an important member of the squad.

United had identified Hall as a leading option, with the 22-year-old already proving that he can perform consistently at Premier League level while still having plenty of room to develop.

The Red Devils were understood to have made direct contact over a potential move, although Newcastle repeatedly made it clear that they had no intention of selling.

That stance forced United to explore alternatives, with Alejandro Balde emerging as another option during the latter stages of the window.

Hall would have offered something slightly different.

Comfortable driving forward with the ball and aggressive when supporting attacks, he has developed into one of the most highly-rated young full-backs in England since leaving Chelsea.

However, any hope of United returning for him in a future window has now suffered another major blow.

Lewis Hall signs new contract

According to The Times, Hall has agreed a new five-year contract with Newcastle United which is expected to be officially announced on Wednesday.

The agreement will keep him at St James’ Park until the summer of 2031 and is also expected to make him one of Newcastle’s best-paid players.

The report adds that Manchester United contacted Newcastle directly during the summer but were told emphatically that Hall was not for sale, regardless of the offer placed on the table.

United had reportedly been willing to spend around £60 million as they searched for a long-term successor to Shaw.

Hall initially needed time to establish himself after joining Newcastle from Chelsea, first on loan before a £35million permanent move, but his development since has been impressive.

He became a regular, earned senior England recognition and increasingly looked like exactly the kind of long-term defensive option United wanted.

For now, though, Newcastle have successfully shut the door by tying one of their most valuable young players down for the long term.
