Ligue 1 star confirms imminent summer transfer amidst Tottenham Hotspur interest

Tottenham are frontrunners to sign Lyon star Rayan Cherki in the summer

Tottenham Hotspur need to bring in midfield reinforcements in the summer. The Lilywhites have endured a disastrous domestic campaign and it is fair to say that Ange’s men have failed to create many chances for their attackers this season. The North London club needs a massive squad overhaul in the summer and Daniel Levy will need to bring in new players if Ange’s men want to close the gap on their rivals next season.

Spurs have struggled to create chances from midfield this season. The Lilywhites have only one out-and-out creative midfielder in their ranks. All the burden for making something happen from the centre of the pitch relies heavily on James Maddison. The England international has proved to be a vital part of Big Ange’s setup, but his injury record has not been great since he signed for Tottenham.

Other midfielders in the team have struggled to perform as well. Yves Bissouma , Lucas Bergvall, and Rodrigo Bentancur have not been able to make regular impact in the final third of the pitch. Several injuries to key players have also hampered the progress under Ange Postecoglou this season.

Tottenham receive a massive boost in their efforts to sign Lyon star Rayan Cherki

There is no surprise that Tottenham are in the market for a creative midfielder. The Lilywhites are preparing to shuffle the squad and want to bolster their attack by bringing in a versatile player. With James Maddison facing an uncertain future at the club, Daniel Levy will be forced to invest in a quality replacement that could fill the creative void left behind by the Englishman.

It was reported earlier that Spurs are interested in signing Rayan Cherki from Lyon in the summer. Now, the Lilywhites have received a massive boost in their efforts to sign the France international. Cherki has all but confirmed his exit from the French club as the transfer window approaches. Speaking after Lyon’s win against Angers, Cherki said (via Fabrizio Romano),

“I’m ready to try a new chapter in my career. Thanks to OL, the coach, the staff, the president, my teammates and all people at the club”.

The Lyon star is available for £19m, thanks to the release clause in his current contract. It goes without saying that signing Rayan Cherki would be the bargain of the summer. The France international has proven his worth on the biggest stages, and he is touted to be one of the best players in world football in his position.

The 21-year-old would be an ideal fit for Tottenham as well. Rayan Cherki tends to thrive in tight spaces and he can either play as a number ten, or a wide player. The Lyon star has a brilliant passing range and prefers to tee up other players in the team by creating space for them. However, Cherki is not a powerhouse and does not tend to run continuously. Therefore, he might struggle to play in a high-pressing team.
