Lincoln City agree deal to sign Manchester United striker

Manchester United’s summer business has stretched well beyond the first-team squad in recent weeks.

Old Trafford’s recruitment and development staff have had plenty to manage across multiple levels of the club.

Interest from elsewhere in English football has continued to filter through as the window edges towards its close.

One situation in particular has moved quickly in recent days.

Manchester United striker set to join Lincoln City

Ethan Wheatley has agreed to join Lincoln City on loan for the season, with the move seen as an important next step in his development, as reported by Sky Sports.

Everton had previously shown interest in the 20-year-old, but Lincoln have won the race for his signature.

Ethan Wheatley spent last season out on loan with Northampton Town and Bradford City, though his return in front of goal was modest.

He scored three times in 37 appearances across those spells, yet United still see enough in his profile to keep backing his progress.

The forward first made his mark at youth level in 2022, scoring 14 goals before earning a step up.

He added a further 14 goals once promoted to the next age group, continuing his development within the club’s system.

His first-team opportunities at Old Trafford have been limited to just four appearances so far.

Three of those came under Erik ten Hag, including his debut against Sheffield United in April 2024, with a further outing under Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Lincoln City have lost their opening two Championship matches, against Middlesbrough and Portsmouth, since returning to the second tier.

That means Wheatley could find himself under pressure to make an impact soon after his move is completed.

Wheatley’s contract at United runs until 2028, with the club continuing to view him as part of their long-term plans.

An initial fee, along with add-ons and a sell-on percentage, had reportedly been outlined as part of United’s asking terms before Everton’s interest cooled.

Everton had viewed Wheatley as one for the future, but also as a player capable of making a first-team impact given his physical profile and composure in front of goal.

With finances at a premium on Merseyside and David Moyes still working to add further first-team signings, funds were ultimately prioritised elsewhere.

That shift opened the door for Lincoln to move quickly and secure a straight season-long loan agreement for the striker.

United will now hope regular Championship football helps accelerate a player they still regard as one of their most promising prospects.
