Soccer star Lionel Messi and his Barcelona teammates will take a huge pay cut amid the coronavirus outbreak. The 32-year-old megastar and the rest of his team have taken a 70 percent reduction in pay in order to help out the non-sporting staff, according to ESPN's Moises Llorens and Sam Marsden.
Messi also said the players will make an additional contribution so none of the non-sporting staff's salary will be reduced during this difficult time.
The Argentinian forward shared the news via social media, and his fellow teammates shared the news as well. Barca has confirmed that an agreement was reached for the players to take a temporary pay cut as the organization is feeling the effects of the COVID-19 outbreak.
The players' generosity has allowed employees to continue being paid in full, but they have taken a big hit in income with games canceled and the closure of the Barca museum.
Barca players aren't the only ones to take pay cut, either. Borussia Dortmund and Juventus players have also agreed to give up part of their salaries in order to help employees during this tough time.
