Excited Paris Saint-Germain supporters will have to wait a little longer to see Lionel Messi wear the shirt in a competitive game.
As Adriana Garcia reported for ESPN, Paris Saint-Germain coach Mauricio Pochettino confirmed Messi won't make his debut during Saturday's Ligue 1 match against Strasbourg. The six-time Ballon d’Or winner joined PSG on Tuesday and, thus, has completed only two training sessions since signing a two-year contract that includes an option for a third year as a free agent.
Garcia added that Messi and other signings will be introduced to fans at PSG's Parc des Princes ahead of the contest.
"We have to take it one step at a time," Pochettino explained about eventually selecting Messi. "The priority is that he feels well. A month ago, he played the Copa America final and he has to make his debut in the best conditions. But I've seen a very matured Messi, the player we all know. What I see is a Messi that is happy and with incredible energy."
Messi originally intended to remain with Barcelona, but the Spanish giants could not register his new agreement because of La Liga's strict financial rules related to salaries -- "financial and structural obstacles (Spanish Liga regulations)," according to a Barcelona statement.
Meanwhile, veteran PSG defender Sergio Ramos is expected to be sidelined four weeks with a calf injury he suffered in preseason training. The former Real Madrid captain also joined PSG on a free transfer this summer.
