Liverpool lands England international in cut-price deal

It's been a busy summer for Liverpool. After years of limited investment, Fenway Sports Group has opened its checkbook to bankroll a major overhaul of the current squad.

The latest addition to Liverpool's roster is England international Marc Guehi. The talented defender has made the move to Merseyside in a $47.4 million deal. Crystal Palace has also included a 10 percent sell-on clause.

Guehi will now be expected to form a formidable partnership with Virgil van Dijk in the heart of Liverpool's defense. His ability to read the game, make well-timed tackles and close down space will be a perfect fit in Arne Slot's system.

The 2025-26 season is Guehi's eighth in the Premier League. He signed with Palace in 2021, joining from Swansea City, and made a total of 135 top-flight appearances for the club.

In terms of defensive metrics, Guehi has made 168 tackles, blocked 156 shots and made 103 interceptions during his tenure with Palace. He leaves the South London club with a 42.3 percent tackle completion.

Signing such a talented defender, especially an English one, for such a low transfer fee is certainly a coup for Liverpool. Typically, English talent is in high demand due to the "Homegrown Player Rule."

Add in the fact that Guehi is an international regular and that he could become a bedrock of Liverpool's defense for the next half-decade or more, and this is arguably one of the best transfer moves of the summer.

Liverpool came into this summer as reigning Premier League champions. The moves it has made should ensure it is among the contenders for the foreseeable future. Furthermore, it has now got one of the strongest squads in all of Europe.

Guehi was just another piece of that rapidly unfolding puzzle.
