Liverpool legend officially appointed as Mason Greenwood manager

Manchester United supporters have watched several familiar names continue their careers across Europe since leaving Old Trafford.

Mason Greenwood is an important part of Fenerbahce’s plans, having made an impressive start to the Turkish side’s domestic season.

The forward has registered 4 goals and 2 assists in the league, giving him 6 goal contributions in his first 7 appearances.

His club, however, has endured a turbulent spell as they sit fifth in the Super Lig after nine matches.

Fenerbahce’s latest setback came against arch-rivals Galatasaray, with the 2-1 defeat leaving them 6 points behind the league leaders.

The derby also descended into ugly scenes, adding to the pressure surrounding a club that has struggled to find consistency in Europe.

Fenerbahce announced on their website that Dirk Kuyt has now been placed in interim charge of Fenerbahce after Ismail Kartal resigned, creating another major change around Greenwood and his team-mates.

The former Netherlands international had been working as Kartal’s assistant after joining the coaching staff in June.

Fenerbahce confirmed that Dirk Kuyt will oversee the first team until a permanent head coach is appointed.

Kuyt is no stranger to the Istanbul club, having scored 37 goals in 130 appearances during his playing spell and helped them win the Turkish league title in 2014.

He also spent six years at Liverpool, scoring 71 goals in 285 appearances, and will now prepare for a Champions League meeting with his former club on 4 November.

The Galatasaray defeat was particularly explosive.

A confrontation between Romelu Lukaku and Galatasaray defender Abdulkerim Bardakci erupted just seconds into the match, while a separate mass confrontation involving players and staff followed the final whistle.

Fenerbahce condemned the post-match scenes and called for an investigation, while Galatasaray disputed the club’s account of events.

Kuyt’s immediate task is to steady a side chasing domestic success while trying to revive its European campaign.
