Speculation has erupted after claims that the Anfield club are exploring a remarkable short-term move for the Argentine icon.
As Liverpool’s difficult campaign drags into 2026, fresh reports have emerged suggesting the club could attempt one of the most astonishing deals in Premier League history. According to Spanish outlet SPORT, the Reds are among the teams assessing a highly complex loan arrangement for Lionel Messi.
The 38-year-old is believed to be considering a temporary return to European football ahead of this summer’s World Cup. With Major League Soccer currently in its off-season until late February, Messi is eager to remain match-fit and competitive as he prepares to defend Argentina’s title across the USA, Canada and Mexico. A short spell in a stronger league could provide the perfect platform.
High-profile MLS stars returning to Europe during the American winter is not without precedent. David Beckham famously joined AC Milan on loan in early 2009, and a similar arrangement would make sporting sense for Messi, even if it presents challenges for Inter Miami.
From Liverpool’s perspective, the idea carries obvious appeal. The squad is crying out for creativity, and few players in football history have ever matched Messi’s ability to unlock defences. While the financial demands would be substantial, a six-month agreement could be manageable, particularly given recent transfer behaviour that has already departed from the club’s traditional model.
In the wake of Diogo Jota’s tragic passing, Liverpool’s hierarchy appeared to adopt a far more aggressive approach in the market, breaking the British transfer record to secure Alexander Isak. That willingness to act boldly has led some to wonder whether the club could now apply the same logic to a once-unthinkable pursuit of Messi.
For all the excitement, the player’s own preferences remain the major obstacle. Messi has never shown serious interest in playing in England, and if he does return to Europe, a reunion with Barcelona still feels the most natural outcome — despite the club’s ongoing financial difficulties.
Other options appear even less realistic. Another Spanish club is effectively impossible, while Italian sides are unlikely to afford the package required. A return to France or a move to Germany also seems improbable, leaving the Premier League as the only viable alternative should Messi decide against remaining in Miami.
Even so, the prospect of Liverpool completing such a deal remains remote. The club rarely engages in this type of transfer, and it would require both a dramatic shift in philosophy and a change of heart from Messi himself. Still, with so much unpredictability already surrounding Anfield this season, the speculation refuses to fade.
