It has been a strong summer of business for Liverpool, and Arne Slot thinks the club is well positioned to bring in even more cash down the line.
There was plenty of movement at Anfield during the transfer window, both in terms of players coming in and heading out.
But despite making a number of shrewd moves, their play on the pitch has not always matched up to expectations – even though they have still managed to pick up every point on offer so far.
Part of that pressure might be coming from outside the club, with plenty of attention on how much they have spent – especially with two players costing over £100 million each. That kind of investment has put them under an early spotlight.
Slot spoke about this in his recent press conference and pointed out that Liverpool already have players who could command similar fees if they were put on the market today.
Florian Wirtz has found himself under scrutiny early in the season, mostly because of the hefty price tag Liverpool paid for him.
However, Slot is pleased with the German’s contributions so far, despite his understated start.
The Dutchman was quick to defend the 22-year-old in the press conference before the Atletico Madrid match, even suggesting Szoboszlai would command a similar fee.
“There is so much focus on the new signings, especially the pundits who prefer other teams who cannot stop talking about £450m I repeat £450m I repeat £450m!
“And these players are indeed a lot of money, but they are now playing with players now who are worth the same amount of money. If we sold Dominik Szoboszlai tomorrow, he would be worth £100m as well.”
Despite Wirtz’s arrival, Szoboszlai has maintained his place in the team due to his adaptability. His significant minutes played this season as a right-back underscore his value in the squad.
When Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong picked up injuries, there was a fair bit of concern among Liverpool supporters about how the team would handle their absence.
That concern only grew when it became clear they would have to face Newcastle and Arsenal without them – two difficult fixtures in any season.
Szoboszlai has stepped up to the challenge, becoming one of the most important players in the squad so far this season.
His impact has not just been limited to defence. When he has played in midfield, like he did against Burnley, he has looked just as effective going forward.
He is expected to feature again when Liverpool take on Atletico Madrid on Wednesday, and it would not be a shock to see him play a big part once again.
