Tottenham face an upward battle to land Crystal Palace skipper Marc Guehi in the summer following Liverpool’s entry into the race

Tottenham Hotspur’s last season was largely ravaged by an injury crisis, preventing the team to make progress under Ange Postecoglou. While they ended up winning the Europa League, the Lilywhites’ awful Premier League displays and 17th-placed finish led to the sacking of Ange Postecoglou.

Thomas Frank is now the man in charge of turning the club’s fortunes around. He is tasked with getting the North Londoners fighting for the top four spots in the Premier League as well as competing in the Champions League next season. Now, the Hotspur Way chiefs are aiming to bolster their squad with exciting players, seemingly setting their sights on a central defender.

Tottenham had a January deadline day bid rejected for Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi, but that hasn’t stopped them from pursuing him this summer. They remain interested in the England international, who is entering the final year of his contract at Selhurst Park. He is unlikely to sign a new deal with no discussions happening currently, meaning Crystal Palace’s best chance to get a substantial fee from his sale lies in this summer.

Marc Guehi has established himself as one of the best defenders in the Premier League in the last few years. With his composure on the ball, reading of the game, physicality, aggressiveness and leadership skills, he has won plenty of admirers across the Premier League. The 24-year-old enjoyed another strong season with the Eagles, capped off by captaining his side in the FA Cup final win over Manchester City.

However, it looks like Spurs are set to face stiff competition from one of their Premier League rivals for the centre-back’s signature. According to a report from The Telegraph, Liverpool are expected to make a ‘significant’ offer for Guehi, having acted swiftly to raise funds with the sale of Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen.

The Reds have already secured the signing of Jeremie Frimpong, while Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez are set to be the next players to arrive at Anfield. They are certainly not resting on their laurels and want to bolster their defensive unit further with the addition of Guehi, who will almost certainly depart Palace this summer.

A potential big offer from Liverpool for the Palace skipper is bad news for Tottenham. A Premier League proven commodity with leadership and organisational skills, Guehi would be an excellent fit in Thomas Frank’s system at White Hart Lane.

As Cristian Romero is heavily linked with a move to Atletico Madrid, Micky van de Ven is yet to keep himself fit across two seasons in North London, and Radu Dragusin out with an ACL rupture, Spurs certainly need more options at the back to tackle the gruelling 2025/26 campaign. A player of Guehi’s experience, capability and potential would be a perfect acquisition.

That said, it seems that if Tottenham want to get involved in the battle for the English defender, they must act fast or risk losing him to Arne Slot’s club.
