New Liverpool star Alexander Isak highlights the ambition of competition for all major trophies with the Merseyside club this season. The 26-year-old played for 45 minutes against Southampton in the Carabao Cup third round and scored the opening Liverpool goal.

The Reds eventually won the game 2-1 after Hugo Ekitike scored the late winning goal to cancel Southampton’s 78th-minute equaliser. Isak has already displayed glimpses of his remarkable talent as a number nine, which has earned him a global reputation.

The Reds signed Isak for a British record of £125m from Newcastle United after a long transfer saga this summer. The Swede enjoyed an incredible tenure at Newcastle, helping them win the Carabao Cup last season, ending their trophy drought.

The 26-year-old scored 62 goals and provided 11 assists from 109 appearances for the Magpies, establishing himself as a forward. Liverpool have also bolstered various positions during the summer, showcasing ambition to build upon their last season’s Premier League success.

Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com after the Southampton victory, Isak highlighted the ambition to compete for all major trophies with Liverpool. He said:

“I think especially when you play for a club like Liverpool, you’ve got to compete on all fronts. That’s the main goal: to be competitive in all competitions, going out to every game wanting to win.”

Liverpool have started the season strongly despite showing a bit of vulnerability in the defence due to their overly attacking approach. The Reds have won five out of their first five Premier League games, scoring 11 goals but conceding five goals.

However, they will face Crystal Palace next in the Premier League clash without Ekitike due to the red card suspension. Isak remains a contender to start the game once again, but his game time will remain limited at the moment.

At the same time, in-form Italian star Federico Chiesa could also start as a makeshift number nine if required. Liverpool’s depth in attack has helped the club through a rather struggling start, but they need to gain more cohesion and stability to achieve the ambition that Isak has highlighted.
