Liverpool vs. Atletico Madrid, Manchester derby linked to spikes in coronavirus deaths?

England's decision to allow multiple sporting events that included large gatherings after it was known the coronavirus was in the country is coming under further scrutiny.

As The Telegraph's Paul Nuki wrote on Tuesday, the derby between Manchester United and Manchester City on March 8 and the Liverpool-Atletico Madrid Champions League tie on March 11, as well as the Cheltenham Festival, are all being linked to spikes in coronavirus deaths.

Nuki added:

Analysis by Edge Health, a leading supplier of data to the NHS, shows that each fixture is linked to between 2.5 and 3.5 additional deaths per day at local hospitals 20 to 35 days later, compared with similar hospital trusts which were used as a control.

Evidence that mass gatherings spread the virus outbreak exists around the world. Earlier this month, Kyle Neddenriep of the Indianapolis Star noted that five individuals who attended an Indiana high school basketball game in early March later died due to complications from coronavirus.

Football matches that occurred in Spain and Italy during the early stages of the virus outbreak have been referred to as "biological bombs."

The coronavirus pandemic halted professional and amateur sporting events around the world in mid-March and left leagues scrambling for ideas to complete or begin seasons. Neither the NBA, NHL, or MLB have announced plans for games hoped to be played in 2020.

It's essentially a lock that sporting events held in stadiums throughout the world will occur without fans in attendance for the foreseeable future because of the coronavirus.
