Liverpool winger officially signs for Manchester United

Manchester United have a long history of turning promising young players into first-team stars.

That makes the recruitment of teenagers from other elite academies particularly important as the Red Devils look to strengthen their youth ranks.

United have raided Liverpool before, although moves between the two clubs remain relatively rare given the rivalry between the sides.

Michael Owen famously made the switch to Old Trafford in 2009 after starting his career at Anfield, while Ethan Ennis became another Liverpool academy graduate to join United in 2021.

More recently, United have increasingly looked towards rival academies for the next generation of talent, with the club also bringing in young players from Manchester City.

Manchester United have now announced, via their website, the signing of 16-year-old winger Isaac Konde from Liverpool, adding another highly rated youngster to their academy setup.

Isaac Konde joined Liverpool at under-9 level and progressed through the club’s academy before making six appearances for their Under-18 side last season, registering one assist.

The teenager is capable of playing on either flank or through the middle, with his blistering pace, close control and ability to attack space behind defenders among the qualities that have attracted attention.

He is initially joining United on a one-year scholarship agreement, with a five-year professional contract expected once he turns 17 in October.

Konde is expected to link up with Darren Fletcher’s Under-18 side as he begins the next stage of his development at Carrington.

The move is not completely straightforward, however, with Liverpool entitled to compensation after the youngster rejected their terms and opted to continue his career at Old Trafford.

Konde’s arrival also comes during an aggressive period of youth recruitment from United, who have recently added Manchester City youngsters Karim Cassim and David Eze to their academy.

The strategy comes as United continue to search for young players who could eventually make the difficult step from academy football into the first team.
