Los Angeles FC goalkeeper Hugo Lloris expressed his frustration about the condition of BC Place’s artificial turf following LAFC’s elimination on penalties to the Vancouver Whitecaps.

The 38-year-old keeper described the artificial surface as “unacceptable.”

“First of all I really want to be honest with you,” Lloris said. “I come to the MLS because I still want to enjoy football. I was really pleased for the semifinal of the conference to see a full stadium, but I think playing on an artificial pitch like this one, it’s almost unacceptable.

BC Place is a multi-purpose stadium that uses FieldTurf. The venue opened in 1983 but was renovated in 2009 and 2011.

“I think the MLS should think about it and the owner of Vancouver should think about it because we all love football,” he said. “This pitch and this crowd, this stadium deserves a better field, you know. In lower divisions in France there’s even better artificial pitches than this one. I think it’s something that we can improve for the MLS.”

Star forward Son Heung-min scored twice for LAFC in a losing effort.

Lloris joined LAFC ahead of the 2024 MLS season. He made 145 appearances for the French national team before retiring from international football in 2023.

The former Tottenham Hotspur favorite started in the 2018 FIFA World Cup final, helping France defeat Croatia 4-2.

His performances in goal propelled LAFC to win the 2024 U.S. Open Cup in extra time against Sporting Kansas City.
