Tottenham’s brilliant start to the season under Thomas Frank has helped mask some of the underlying issues within the squad. Despite their strong performances, it is becoming increasingly clear that the Lilywhites are in desperate need of a new centre-forward if they are to compete seriously on all four fronts this campaign.
At present, Richarlison has been handed the role of first-choice striker at N17 after failing to secure a move away in the summer. To his credit, the Brazilian has made the most of the opportunity so far . The 28-year-old is currently the joint-top scorer for Tottenham this season, alongside Brennan Johnson, and has looked revitalised under Frank’s system.
However, concerns persist among the Spurs faithful regarding his long-term reliability. Richarlison’s inconsistent finishing and recurring fitness issues have raised doubts over whether he can lead the line throughout an entire season. His main competitor for the #9 role, Dominic Solanke, has also struggled to make an impression, with injuries hampering his ability to find form and consistency since arriving at the club.
With both striker struggling to convince, Tottenham are being linked with a move for Ivan Toney in the January transfer window. Thomas Frank is known to be a long-time admirer of the prolific forward, having worked closely with him during their successful stint together at Brentford. Reports suggest that the Danish tactician has even personally reached out to the 29-year-old in an attempt to persuade him to join Spurs.
However, reliable journalist Dean Jones has provided the latest update on Toney’s potential move to Spurs. Speaking to TEAMtalk, Jones said,
“There is no genuine sign of Toney moving back to the Premier League at the moment, but it is interesting that noises are starting to be made around him. There have been some whispers about him going to Spurs.”
The journalist added,
“Obviously, there is the Thomas Frank link from Brentford, but I do not get the impression there is too much in it. It’s not one that I have heard Spurs seriously looking at for now, but we will know for sure soon once they outline the initial target list for the new year. I personally think there are players they will look to before Toney.”
As per Jones, Ivan Toney is not eyeing a return to the Premier League anytime soon. Despite Thomas Frank’s past experiences with the player, Tottenham are not looking to make a move for the 29-year-old in the upcoming transfer window. The journalist claims that the Lilywhites are looking to bring in a new striker, but they would look to bring in other players before considering making a move for Toney.
We can only imagine that this might be bad news for Ivan Toney. The Al Ahli forward is eager to get selected for Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the upcoming World Cup next year. And given that the German tactician is not looking to call-up players that are not playing in a top European league at club level, the 29-year-old might miss out on a chance to get on the plane to the USA.
