Atletico Madrid’s long-standing interest in Tottenham Hotspur star Cristian Romero refuses to go away.
The La Liga club have been pursuing the centre-back’s signature throughout the summer, with their manager and fellow Argentinian Diego Simeone a big fan of his talent. However, Spurs have shown no intention of letting their World Cup winner leave, slapping a £70million asking price. Daniel Levy has shown no willingness to budge on the player’s valuation as he still has two years remaining on his White Hart Lane contract.
This led to Atletico Madrid growing tired of the saga and reportedly cooling their chase of Cristian Romero last week. Los Rojiblancos were willing to reach €55m, but the Lilywhites quickly rejected their advances and made it clear they won’t enter into negotiations for their defensive wall. As a result, they decided to move to other targets to strengthen their backline for the upcoming season.
Atletico’s interest have not evaporated, though, and they are now planning to make a new proposal to test Tottenham’s resolve for the 27-year-old.
According to a report from Spanish outlet Fichajes, Atletico are determined to ‘break the market’ with a ‘strong’ offer of €80 million to secure the signing of Romero.
The Tottenham man is Diego Simeone’s priority to strengthen the defensive unit, as the Atletico boss dreams of competing in La Liga and the Champions League. He feels the Argentina international is the ‘missing piece’ in his defence to compete for titles next season.
Spurs have been firm on their decision that Romero is not far sale this summer. However, the aforementioned report claims that the central defender’s desire to change scenery and play in the Spanish top-flight could be key in unlocking the door. From Atletico’s point of view, they remain confident that the massive economic offer, combined with the player’s desire for a new challenge, could lead to a change in the scenario.
Levy has been in favour of keeping Romero and stuck on his £70million valuation. Up until now, the Tottenham chairman managed to scare off Atletico with that the hefty price tag. The La Liga side appeared to have ended their pursuit of the South American but that is not the reality. They are now ready to table an €80 million proposal- an offer that will be closer to Tottenham’s valuation.
Indeed, if Atletico ends up tabling such a proposal, it will be interesting to see what Levy decides to do. It will be difficult to turn down such an alluring proposition but replacing such a decorated defender in Romero with just weeks away from the start of the 2025/26 campaign should be a difficult task.
