Man arrested after police inquiry into racist tweet sent to England's Marcus Rashford

Police investigating a racist tweet directed at England forward Marcus Rashford have arrested and released a 50-year-old man, according to Sky Sports.

West Mercia Police said the suspect was detained on suspicion of inciting racial hatred following a report of an ill-suited tweet posted on Sunday after England's loss to Italy in the Euro 2020 final.

The tweet reportedly appeared on the account of a youth football coach, who claims his Twitter account was hacked.

Rashford and several other Black players on the England national team, including Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka, fell victim to a slew of racist tweets after all three missed penalty kicks in the Euro final.

The England Football Association released a statement earlier this week condemning the online racist abuse of players following the shootout loss. The England national team and UEFA also released similar statements.

In addition to the comments, a mural dedicated to Rashford in Manchester was vandalized. The mural honors his work campaigning for free school meals for vulnerable children in Britain.
