Man City's Erling Haaland won't face punishment after throwing ball at opponent

Sunday's thrilling match between reigning Premier League champions Manchester City and back-to-back runner-up Arsenal had all the makings of a classic rivalry match.

There were fouls, there were cards and there was feistiness among the players - something that felt like it was almost gone from the league entirely.

Manchester City's John Stones found an equalizing goal right at the death in the 98th minute, allowing his team to escape with a standings point and its 33-match home unbeaten streak intact.

Immediately following the goal, star City striker Erling Haaland was seen throwing the ball directly at, and making contact with, Arsenal defender Gabriel's head. The referee apparently did not see it and the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) found no offense in replay.

The Daily Mail's Jack Gaughan reported Monday that the league decided no further action was needed regarding the incident.

The entire match was full of aggressive play from both sides, befitting of a rivalry match of this magnitude, including Haaland bowling over an Arsenal player at the re-start after the equalizer.

It was a heartbreaker for Arsenal as it led 2-1 at halftime, despite seeing forward Leandro Trossard sent off with a second yellow card for delaying the restart after a foul. He was seen clearly booting the ball away from the referee after the whistle was blown, an infraction the league has been cracking down on this season.

The entire second half, the Gunners were forced to play ultra-defensive with just 10 men on the pitch. It was a tactic that almost worked out for them in the end.

Once the whistle blew at full time, the midfield handshakes were anything but cordial. Again, Haaland was caught on camera taking a verbal jab at Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, telling him to "stay humble."

The interaction drew a defensive response from Gunners forward, and former City striker, Gabriel Jesus who confronted a clearly rattled Haaland.

The fiery moments on the field feel like a return to the Premier League's infancy, when rivalries between Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool were at a fever pitch.

Manchester City and Arsenal will get their highly anticipated rematch on Feb. 1, a game that could very well decided the fate of the league title.
